Jan Soukup, PhD, PEng

- portrait of the author

Romantic motives brought Dr. Jan Soukup (* 1944) first into the heart

of Western Canada, to sink roots in the region of Edmonton in the

province of Alberta. Here he studied to achieve a doctorate in the field of Nuclear Physics from the University of Alberta and with his wife raised a family. Only when the offsprings had reached adulthood and spread the wings into the world,  the newly found freedom after the finished family responsibility and a relative geographical proximity to his target allowed him to realize a dream of many years, for which he had prepared himself by his lifestyle of regular running, swimming, riding a horse and bicycle, paddling a canoe on rivers and lakes of Alberta and British Columbia, mushing a dog sled and competing in Modern Pentathlon, cross-country ski marathons and triathlons. While other men of his age think of rest and safety, he sets out solo, or with his faithful partner - Milena - into the wilderness for weeks to seek their human roots.
